How High Can Shipping Containers Be Stacked?
Jun 12,2022

You've probably seen pictures of container ships carrying hundreds of shipping containers stacked on top of one another, wondering how are they not falling off or collapsing on themselves with all that weight.

And the truth is, there is a science to determining how high can shipping containers be stacked, and when dealing with such heavy items that carry valuable goods, it’s no surprise that the requirements are strictly followed in the shipping industry.

What A Container Need to Ensure its Stability?

Before beginning, it’s crucial that we work out what does a shipping container consist of.

Within the many spare parts in the container, the supporting steel parts are essential to stack the tremendous amount of pressure. These container parts are separated into three areas, shown as below:

1.Roof: Top Side Rail, Roof Panel
2.Base structure: Bottom Side Rail, Cross Members, Tunnel Rails

3.Rear/Front End: Corner Post, Corner Casting (also called Corner Fitting)

In the daily maintenance of shipping containers, the framework is the first place you should check. Problems with the framework could be a cause for concern, especially if the frame is bent. During the inspection, check to make sure that the frame is straight. You can do that by taking a step back and conducting a visual inspection of the frame. If the frame appears to be bent, or the container appears to lean to one side, there's a good chance that the frame is damaged.

The above three parts construct the frame of a container. As for the rest “vertical” doors and walls (including Side Panel and Doors), they were installed in the container frame with lashing equipment and they also play an important role that ensure the contents in the container in a safe and stable environment, just like the relationship between skeleton and flesh.

When single container gets ready for the stacking, you should also lock the containers together, as that will provide additional stability and help protect the stack from environmental elements. In this circumstance, high-quality locking devices will be needed. Twist Lock can secure shipping containers, either to the ground, horizontally, or stacked vertically on top of each other. Each method requires a different type of Twist Lock, including Vertical Locks and Horizontal Locks, of which further subdivide into Manual and Semi-Automatic types.
