What is the Inspection of Containers?
Dec 08,2023

In general, prior to transportation, safety officers visually inspect the condition of shipping containers using the seven-point visual inspection method. They will pay attention to the condition of these components: the door, undercarriage, floor, front wall, roof, left and right sides of the container. It is used to assess the structural integrity of containers and guarantee the safe transport of cargo, which could help prevent damages that can lead to more serious problems and incidents.

The inspection checklist can vary depending on the business or companies, but its contents are generally quite similar. In addition, insurance companies are now making industry and regulatory agencies pay more attention to "cargo integrity".

The order of the seven-point inspection may be determined by the actual business of different companies, mainly using visual inspection and related tools:

- Front Wall:
- Ensure that all corner blocks are visible and in good condition. The front wall should be corrugated.
- Measure the internal dimensions of the container using a ruler to match the specification.
- Confirm that the ventilation port is visible and not obstructed by foreign objects.
- Tap the front wall with the hammer to ensure a hollow sound.

- Left Side:
- Examine if there will be the internal and external repairs visible on the side wall.
- Check for any abnormal repairs on the cross members or rails.
- Tap the left wall with a small hammer to ensure a hollow sound.

- Right Side:
- Examine the internal and external repairs visible on the side wall.
- Check for any abnormal repairs on the cross members or rails.
- Tap the right wall with a small hammer to ensure a hollow sound.

- Floor:
- Measure the height from the bottom to the top to ensure compliance with specifications.
- To determine the level of cleanliness, check for any residue or pollutants and assess whether there is any extra moisture present. If any of these issues are detected, it is important to clean them promptly.
- Check for any abnormal repairs.
- Confirm that the bottom is flat and all heights are the same.

- Ceiling/Roof:
- The shape of the top should be consistent, neither concave nor convex.
- Examine the top corner blocks and their distance from the top. Normally, the top should be slightly lower or aligned with the top of the corner blocks.
- Check for any abnormal repairs.
- Confirm that the exhaust vent is visible and not obstructed by foreign objects.

- Doors (Inside / Outside):
- Ensure the reliability and safety of the door hardwares system.
- Ensure there are no solid foreign matter in the holes.
- Check the type and color of rivets, prevent block or oil stains around them.

- Under carriage:
- Prior to container loading, inspect it's chassis and exterior.
- Use a mirror to check the chassis and ensure all supporting cross beams are visible, with no external objects attached to the landing gear.
- Inspect visible external repairs from inside the container.
- Tap the exterior with a hammer to ensure a hollow sound.
