Understanding the CSC Nameplate: The "ID Card" of the Container
Jul 02,2024
To ensure the safe transport of goods, every container must have a valid CSC nameplate. This article will provide a comprehensive understanding of the CSC nameplate and the two types of inspection plans for containers.
What is a Container CSC Nameplate?

The CSC nameplate, akin to an ID card, is a critical safety certification for containers. Without a valid CSC nameplate, a container cannot be used for international shipping. Made of durable anodized aluminum, these nameplates are designed to last up to 20 years. They certify that the container meets minimum standards for capacity, condition, weight, type, size, and weather resistance.

To obtain a valid CSC nameplate, a container must pass an official CSC inspection conducted by a certified third-party inspection agency. The container owner is responsible for maintaining the container in good condition and ensuring regular inspections.
Interpretation of Container Nameplate Information
The container nameplate includes the following key information:
Classification Society Regulations: Country codes ensuring compliance with the International Convention for Safe Containers.
Container Type: Identifies the type and purpose of the container.
Manufacturer Code: Code assigned by the manufacturer.
Manufacturer Name: Name and address of the manufacturer.
Fumigation Information: Indicates if the container floor has been fumigated.
CSC Safety Approval Number: Unique number for CSC safety approval.
Year of Manufacture: Date the container was manufactured.
Container Number: Unique number assigned to each container.
Maximum Load: Maximum cargo weight the container can hold.
Allowable Stacking Weight: Additional weight that can be stacked on top during storage and transportation.
Transverse Rigidity Test Value: Indicates the container's stability when compressed or hit.
ACEP Number: Number for the Automated Container Inspection Program.

To ensure the validity of the CSC mark, it must be bolted to the container door, and the container must be in good condition during inspection. Any damage invalidates the CSC mark, requiring immediate repair.
Two Types of Inspection Programs: ACEP and PES
The International Convention for Safe Containers mandates regular safety inspections, with two primary programs in use: ACEP (Approved Continuous Inspection Program) and PES (Periodic Inspection Program).
PES is often used by smaller operators and requires a "Next Inspection Date" (NED) on the CSC plate. Inspections must occur within five years of manufacture and every 30 months thereafter.
ACEP allows inspections to coincide with overhauls or handovers and follows the same intervals as PES. Most container owners prefer ACEP because:
1.Inspections are continuous, ensuring better container condition.
2.Containers typically do not have minor damage between the 30-month inspections.
3.There is no need to update the CSC nameplate frequently.

Understanding the CSC nameplate and the associated inspection programs is essential for maintaining the safety and compliance of containers in international shipping.
