Container Identification(1) - Container Size and Type Codes
Dec 24,2024
Container markings are like an "ID card" for the box. Identification marks, operation marks, and passage marks all play crucial roles in various transportation links. Among them, the size and container type codes are the most essential as they can directly show the specifications and type of the container.

Details of Various Container Types

1.Dry Cargo Container (DC): Known as Dry Container in English, with codes like 20GP, 40GP, and 95 code 22G1, 42G1. It's commonly used for general cargo transportation, accounting for about 70 - 80% of the total. The external dimensions of a 20GP are approximately 6.096 meters × 2.438 meters × 2.59 meters. Its internal capacity for loading is about 28 cubic meters, with a weight limit of 22 tons. The 40GP is around 12.192 meters long, can load about 58 cubic meters of goods, and has a weight limit of 26 tons. It has doors at one end or on the side, and you can quickly identify it by the first two digits of the code.

2.Dry Cargo High Cube: Codes like GH (HC/HQ) and 45G1, etc. For example, a 40HQ is about 30.48 centimeters taller than a 40GP. Its external dimensions are approximately 12.192 meters × 2.438 meters × 2.89 meters. The internal volume for loading can reach 76 cubic meters, and the gross weight for loading is 28.62 tons. It can be distinguished by the code "5", which is great for loading large-volume but light cargo.

3.Reefer Container (RF): Reefer Container in English, with codes like "RF" and 42R1, etc. It comes with a freezer and insulated inner walls, divided into internal and external refrigeration systems, used for transporting temperature-controlled goods. The internal dimensions of a 20-foot one are approximately 5.42 meters × 2.26 meters × 2.24 meters, with a load capacity of 17 tons and a volume of 26 cubic meters. The corresponding data for a 40-foot one is about 11.20 meters, 22 tons, and 54 cubic meters.

4.Open Top Container (OT): Open Top Container in English, with codes like "OT" and 42U1, etc. The top can be opened, suitable for loading heavy goods like glass panels. The internal dimensions of a 20-foot one are approximately 5.89 meters × 2.32 meters × 2.31 meters, with a load capacity of 20 tons and a volume of 31.5 cubic meters. The 40-foot one is about 12.01 meters × 2.33 meters × 2.15 meters, with a load capacity of 30.4 tons and a volume of 65 cubic meters. The tops of these containers can be either hard or soft.

5.Others: Tank Container (TK, like 42T1) is for transporting liquids; Flat Rack Container (FR, 42P1) is for carrying overweight and oversized cargo; Garment Container (HT, 42V1) is specifically designed for transporting ready-to-wear clothes. The Logistical Significance of Size and Container Type Codes

During transportation, we need to select a suitable container by comprehensively considering the goods, routes, etc. For small shipments, a 20GP might be a good choice, while for large ones, a 40HQ could be more appropriate, taking into account both the characteristics of the goods and the cost. In the loading, unloading, and storage processes, each container type is operated according to its own features. For example, dry cargo containers are handled and stored in the regular way, while reefer containers require temperature control operations to ensure smooth circulation.

The Practical Value of Size and Container Type Codes

Based on these codes, shippers can accurately package, plan transportation, and prevent goods from being damaged. Logistics practitioners can efficiently allocate resources, standardize loading and unloading operations, control costs, and optimize warehousing.
