Container Identification(2) - Weight and Volume Marking
Jan 06,2025

Today, I would like to bring your attention to a critical aspect of container identification-the weight and volume marking, which plays a pivotal role in our day-to-day logistics operations.Weight and Volume Markings

When we look at a container, from the top down, you'll notice four essential markings: gross weight, tare weight, net weight, and volume. It's important to note that the weights are indicated in both kilograms (KG) and pounds (LB), providing us with flexibility and compatibility across different measurement systems. Meanwhile, the volume is denoted in cubic meters (CU.M.) and cubic feet (CU.FT.), allowing for seamless communication in various international contexts.
Let's break down what each of these means:
MAXIMUM GROSS WEIGHT: This figure represents the sum of the tare weight and the net weight. It serves as a crucial benchmark as both bridge crane loads and road weight limits are calculated based on this number. In other words, it dictates the upper bound of how much a fully loaded container can weigh when it's in transit.
TARE WEIGHT: Quite simply, this is the deadweight of the empty container. Knowing this value is essential as it allows us to accurately calculate the net weight – the actual cargo we can load into the container.
PAYLOAD or NET WEIGHT: This is the maximum weight that a container is designed to carry. It's what we focus on when we're planning our shipments to ensure we don't exceed the container's capacity and risk any safety or compliance issues.
CUBIC CAPACITY: This indicates the maximum loading capacity of a container in terms of volume. It helps us optimize our packing strategies to make the most of the available space.
