Disc Brakes VS Drum Brakes

Drum Brakes

Advantages:

1.Strong Self-Energizing Effect: When the brake linings expand outward, the rotation of the wheel causes the brake drum to twist. The greater the braking force, the more obvious this effect is. They're widely used in large vehicles. The main difference in drum brakes between small and large vehicles lies in the assistance method. Large vehicles use pneumatic assistance while small vehicles rely on vacuum assistance.

2.Low Cost: The manufacturing technology is relatively simple as it's one of the earliest braking systems. And its cost is lower than that of disc brakes.

Disadvantages:

The brake linings are sealed inside the brake drum. When they wear out, the debris is hard to disperse, which affects the contact surface and thus the braking performance.Disc Brakes

Advantages:

1.Easy to Clean and Maintain: The braking system isn't sealed, so the fine particles from wear don't accumulate. The centrifugal force can throw out water and dust. Plus, the parts are exposed outside, making maintenance a breeze.

2.Superior Performance: They dissipate heat quickly, are lightweight, have a simple structure, and are easy to adjust. They can withstand high temperatures under high loads, offer stable braking, and aren't bothered by mud or water. They can stop the vehicle faster in winter or on bad road conditions. Some brake discs even have small holes to accelerate ventilation and heat dissipation.

Disadvantages:

They're costly. There are higher requirements for the manufacturing of brakes and brake lines. The friction pads wear out faster. The friction area is small, requiring higher braking hydraulic pressure. A power-assisted device is needed, so they're mostly suitable for light vehicles.

In car design, a mixed form is often adopted. For most sedans, disc brakes are used on the front wheels while drum brakes are on the rear wheels. That's because the braking load on the front wheels accounts for 70% - 80% of the total vehicle load, and the drum brakes on the rear wheels are more cost-effective. For mid-to-high-end sedans, ventilated disc brakes are used on the front wheels for better heat dissipation, and non-ventilated disc brakes are used on the rear wheels to cut down on costs. With the development of materials and the reduction of costs, there's a tendency for disc brakes to gradually replace drum brakes in the sedan field.Choose CIMC Equilink's disc and drum brake products.
